Despite its wide-ranging presence in the Bible, we Christians have by and large lost touch with this dimension of prayer. It is something we need to recover.
The Book of Psalms is a collection of 150 prayers from different periods of Israel’s life. While the final collection is connected in a special way with the figure of King David, it is difficult to know for sure which, if any, he actually composed.
Each year during Holy Week we Christians stand once again near the cross and hear Jesus’ cry anew. Unlike those described in the Gospel, though, we know exactly what he said and we recognize it as the opening verse of Psalm 22.
