Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 14:1, 7-11

There’s a twofold lesson here. First, Jesus is teaching us that social self-promotion doesn’t really make sense, even from a human point of view. Trying to make ourselves look important may cause us embarrassment. It’s dangerous to give oneself airs.

But theres another dimension here. Jesus is not talking about just human social occasions. Hes also talking about the banquet of the kingdom in which God is our host.

Its not up to us to determine where we belong in the heavenly celebration. It’s up to God to do that. Our role is to allow God to give us the place that is appropriate for us–a place that we do not earn but which a generous Father assigns to us.
