Its good to perform religious practices like prayer and acts of reverence. But we have to perform them with attention of the heart. Otherwise these actions are mere formalities and can lead us to believe that were being religious when were only putting on a show–for others or for ourselves.

In today’s reading Jesus condemns the Pharisees on several counts. Theyre more attentive to their own ego than to the love of God. Being important is very important to them. Their teaching makes God’s law–which is supposed to be a source of joy–into a set of burdens. This is not the kind of religious practice thats pleasing to God.

How sincere am I in my religious practices?
