Daily Reading from the USCCB: John 13:21-33, 36-38

Today’s Gospel is about betrayal. The dictionary offers several definitions of “betray.” One is to deliver to an enemy by treachery. Another is to fail or desert especially in time of need.

The betrayal of Judas was the first kind. Judas handed Jesus over to his enemies while pretending to be his friend. Peter–and ultimately the other disciples as well–betrayed Jesus in the second way, by deserting Jesus in his time of need.

At some time or other all of us have betrayed Jesus. We have been false to the demands of friendship. We have deserted him when he needed us. But he has always been willing to take us back–always willing to forgive. And for that we always owe him our thanks.
