Pause + Pray

Bless This Snack

Some days I dine, but not always. I can be inattentive and ungrateful for food that comforts me more than it sustains. But it is all “fruit of the earth and work of human hands,” as the prayer of offering proclaims.

At the Last Supper, you elevated breaking bread
and passing the cup

to become the sacrament of our spiritual sustenance.
But I sometimes eat carelessly, ungratefully
when daily bread is delivered at a drive-through
or a vending machine.
When I eat, God of all creation,
help me
know the gift each bite can be.
All that is mine to choose,
may I know its blessing.

A candy bar, a potato chip, a banquet, or a microwave meal: I will offer thanks today for everything I eat or drink.
