When we as Christians seek to be poor as Jesus taught us, we do so not for its own sake and not because dehumanizing conditions are virtuous, but because it strips away our temptation to be our own saviors and instead points us to the only one who can save us. That is the Gospel poverty Saint Francis lived. Gospel poverty is a state in which we are stripped of all that prevents us from following him with complete abandon and without counting the cost.
